Personalization at scale sounds like a technology problem. Mostly it's a data-sharing problem between marketing, sales, and support.

Personalization at scale sounds like a technology problem. Mostly it's a data-sharing problem.

Customers don't experience your company as marketing, sales, and support. They experience it as one relationship. The moment a support agent doesn't know what sales already promised, or asks a question marketing already answered, the personalization illusion breaks and the customer notices immediately.

#What personalization actually looks like across the journey

It shows up differently depending on where the customer is. During discovery, it means suggestions based on what they've actually shown interest in, not a generic list. During a purchase, it means not making them re-enter a preference they already gave you. In support, it means an agent who can see enough history to solve the problem without asking the customer to repeat themselves. In loyalty, it means the relationship actually reflects how that specific customer engages with you, not a one-size-fits-all points system.

None of that requires an AI model on day one. It requires the data existing in one place agents can actually see.

#Where teams get this wrong

Most teams treat personalization as a technology purchase before they've fixed the actual data problem: marketing, sales, and support each holding a different slice of the same customer. Layering AI recommendations on top of that fragmentation just makes the fragmentation faster and harder to catch.

Fix the data connection first. Purchase history, support tickets, and product usage all visible in one place to whoever's talking to the customer. Automation is worth investing in once that foundation exists, not before.

#The trust side of this

Personalization only works if customers trust how their data is being used. Be direct about what you're collecting and why, and give people real control over it. Customers who understand that sharing information gets them a better experience, not just better targeting, are far more forgiving of the occasional imperfect recommendation.

#Where to start

Pick one handoff, sales to support is usually the worst, and check whether the agent can see what the customer already told someone else. If they can't, that's the fix that matters more than any AI feature you're considering.

This is core to what we help teams build inside Scale: a shared customer view that holds up as volume grows, instead of falling apart the moment three teams are involved.
